Recommended wood

Birch

Balanced surface for both line work and shading.

Warm to Deep

Shade low, outline medium, accents high.

Technique

Option A — mountain scene

Straight lines, curved lines, hatching, shading and texture.

Option B — tree

Outlines, bark texture, leaf texture and shading.

Option C — animal

Outline, fur texture, shading and reserved highlight areas.

Demonstration

A finished piece with a clear light source, at least three values and two distinct textures.

Digital practice exercise

  1. 1.Pick option A, B or C.
  2. 2.Outline, shade, then texture — in that order.
  3. 3.Finish the whole project digitally before printing it.

The practice board loads as a reference overlay on the wood canvas — set the wood, tip and heat above, then burn over the faint guides.

Beginner challenge

Complete one shaded project end to end without redrawing the outline halfway through.
