Technique

Outline first

Burn the major outline before any interior work — it sets the proportions.

Then details

Interior lines, then light shading, then texture, then darken the important areas last.

Review before you darken

Step back often. Dark marks are permanent.

Demonstration

A clean subject — leaf, mushroom, mountain, pine, sun, moon, flower or simple animal — readable from outlines alone.

  2. 2.Trace the major outline, then add interior details.
  3. 3.Add light shading, then texture, then darken the key areas.
