Lesson 2 · Level 2
Straight Lines
Learn consistent line control.
Recommended wood
Basswood
Even surface keeps line darkness consistent.
Recommended tip
Fine point
Crisp, controlled lines with a predictable width. In the studio: Fine Tip.
Heat level
Scorch
Medium heat around 730°F keeps lines dark without scorching sideways.
Technique
One pass, one breath
Pull the line in a single confident movement. Hesitating leaves dark pools where the tip paused.
Turn the board, not your hand
Rotate the wood so every line is drawn in your most comfortable direction.
Line families
Practise horizontal, vertical, diagonal, short, long, parallel and crossed lines — most designs are built from these.
Demonstration
Lines of even darkness from end to end, evenly spaced, with no wobble and no blobbed starts.
Digital practice exercise
- 1.Burn 10 straight lines at one setting.
- 2.Burn 10 lines that get progressively darker.
- 3.Burn 10 lines that get progressively thicker.
The practice board loads as a reference overlay on the wood canvas — set the wood, tip and heat above, then burn over the faint guides.
Beginner challenge
Build a simple geometric pattern using straight lines only — a mountain, an arrow, a geometric flower or an abstract pattern.
